A Brooklyn politician recently held his 12th annual Prom Dress Giveaway, helping over 300 girls prepare for the big dance.
State Sen. Kevin Parker (D-East Flatbush) hosted the May 18 event at Samuel J. Tilden High School, offering dresses, shoes, make-up, and hair styling consultations.
“Prom is an exciting milestone for seniors and the students in our community need to know that their community supports them and is willing to come together to make sure they have the resources they need to fully celebrate their accomplishments,” Parker said. “I look forward to expanding the event to assist more families year after year.”
For the second time in the 11-year tradition, Parker’s office included a giveaway of suits for young men attending their dances.
The event was sponsored by Macy’s and the Delta Rho Omega Chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, featuring giveaways from Hot 97 radio station and celebrity stylist Shatonia Amee.
Parker said the event was the perfect way to send local teens off to graduation, and the next chapter in their lives.
“I thank the volunteers. A lot of people gave their time and energy to make sure that these young ladies had a great night,” he said. “I look forward to our work next year.”
