Shore it up! Board tells city to find new Hook ferry stop

The city must find a new site for a forthcoming Red Hook ferry stop currently slated for either the Van Brunt Street or Valentino piers, say members of a local panel who claim the planned locations are too far-flung for most neighborhood residents to reach.

“It only affects a small amount of people going to Fairway or Valentino Pier,” said Tom Miskel, captain of the transportation committee for Community Board 6, referring to the popular neighborhood grocery store at the end of Van Brunt Street.

The board on Wednesday voted to support the city’s plan to expand ferry service along the Brooklyn waterfront in 2017, but only if it agrees to study other potential stops in the neighborhood, including one in Atlantic Basin — where the ferry would be within a half-mile walk of most of the neighborhood, proponents say.

The city claims the basin idea wouldn’t float, because customs agents put the facility on lockdown for about 30 days a year so they can process international travelers arriving in the nearby cruise terminal, according to representatives from Economic Development Corporation, which is responsible for implementing the ferry plan.

The basin is also a “no-wake zone,” so ferries would have to drive slowly so they don’t make waves — and that would slow down service along the entire line, corporation officials said.

But board members vowed that they will continue pushing the city to find a way to make it work.

“It’s not dead yet,” Miskel said.

The Red Hook stop is one of five posts the city is adding to the Brooklyn’s shores in 2017 as part of its $55-million city-wide ferry expansion.

Hookers say they are starved for public transportation services — no subway lines reach the harbor-side ’hood, and only two buses meander across the peninsula — so a poorly-sited ferry stop would still be better than none at all.

“This is a great start,” said board member Robert Underwood.

The board also asked the city to consider extending the service between Brooklyn and Governors Island. Currently, Brooklynites can sail directly to the island on weekends between May and September, but otherwise have to go via Manhattan — which is particularly inconvenient for local students of the New York Harbor School, which first opened in Bushwick before moving to the island in 2010.

I am worrying about the actual ridership numbers, once the citywide ferry plan is implemented, will be below the overall ridership projections, thus increasing the overall operating cost per passenger, despite that the fare was the same cost as the base fare of the pay-per-ride Metrocard. In addition, there was not a lot of positive communication between the NYC EDC and the people who are living in "transit deserts" such as Red Hook.

who near atlantic basin? from the area says:
There is 0 (zero) population near Atlantic Basin. So why would anyone think this is a good spot for a ferry? Because their full of it! Or just part of Watertaxi's interest in taking over the spot for more hipster/hotel development of the waterfront.

It's so obvious that this has nothing to do with logistics and everything to do with a push to change use for more over development.

who near atlantic basin: Atlantic Basin is actually centrally located on the waterfront...just look at a map. Plus there's parking at atlantic basin. Why build a new dock when there already is one at atlantic basin? maybe you work for the edc...

The question is; who's near Atlantic Basin? The answers is; no one!

Everyone knows that the Watertaxi wants to take over Atlantic Basin to turn it into a hipster/hotel development on the waterfront and trying to humiliate EDC into allowing them to do so.

Building a dock is no big deal and is not the issue as the city's already committed to doing it.

As for parking, there's plenty of that around the waterfront. And besides, most locals will be walking or biking there anyway.

This objection to Valentino Pier is not about logistics and everything to do with an Atlantic Basin change of use for more, and more, and more over development.

Um, everyone who doesn't live near Fairway or Valentino Pier is closer to Atlantic Basin. I, myself, am a mere two blocks away, as are most people I know. Valentino Pier would mostly only serve the very rich, Fairway type residents, for the rest of us it would be more convenient to just ride the bus. Also, please tell me of this mystery "second bus line"?!? That sounds amazing. The only bus I know of through Red Hook is the 61, ever since they shut down both the 77 and the 71 several years ago.

In terms of ridership, if you place a more centrally located dock -- like, say, at Atlantic Basin, I know I for one would use it. When I first moved to Red Hook there was a commuter ferry near the Fairway Building (not then a Fairway) and it was too far to get to for most people to make sense.

Atlantic Basin is already being developed, the Dock building units are all sold already -- where have you been? Are you sure you're "from the area", who's near Atlantic Basin?
