Food fest serves up regional delicacies of Fifth Avenue

Talk about street food!

Adventurous foodies explored an exotic smorgasbord of regional Park Slope specialties on Wednesday evening at the annual A Taste of Fifth food festival.

The culinary celebration, now in its fourth year, drew a sold-out crowd of gourmands to Grand Prospect Hall on Prospect Avenue to sample local delicacies from the Fifth Avenue region of the neighborhood. Local food peddlers including Fleisher’s Meats, Blue Sky Bakery, and Gorilla Coffee shared their specialties with the crowd, such as the whoopie pie and the bagel, which is said to be especially popular with local peoples.

But seriously, the event, which was organized by the Park Slope Fifth Avenue Business Improvement District, was a big success and raised plenty of dough (the kind that folds, not the kind you bake) for neighborhood charities, organizers said. The epicurean extravaganza generated a record $13,000 for local institutions, including Park Slope Christian Help homeless shelter, Brooklyn Pride, and several schools, said an organizer.

“It was wildly popular,” said festival spokeswoman Carol Klenfner. “We raised more money this year than ever before,”
