Too many buses! Community board says 4th Ave. depot unsafe

Talk about a bus-y intersection.

Bay Ridge’s Community Board 10 is demanding changes to the tangle of five bus routes that use the corner of 86th Street and Fourth Avenue as a depot, arguing that it makes the intersection extremely dangerous.

The B1, B16, S53, S93, and S79 buses pick up and drop off 16,000 people a day at the mega-stop, according to the Metropolitan Transit Authority — resulting in a bus bash the board says is causing horrific congestion on the street and sidewalk on the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge side of the intersection.

“The space just can’t accommodate what we have there,” said district manager Josephine Beckmann at the panel’s Traffic and Transportation Committee meeting on Nov. 12.

Members of the board argued that the congestion — with several simultaneous buses and dozens of people choking the intersection — is part of what makes the crossing — site of frequent pedestrian collisions and vehicular crashes — so unsafe.

“It’s very dangerous right now, and something needs to be done to change it,” said board member Liz Amato.

The members of the committee agreed that part of the problem is that the B1 and S79 buses park on the Fourth Avenue corner after completing their routes for as long as half an hour at a time — and recommended having the buses wait at 95th Street and Fourth Avenue instead, before returning to 86th and Fourth to start their journey again. Others raised the possibility of having one of the Staten Island buses stop along 86th Street instead of along Fourth Avenue.

The full board voted last month in favor of a city proposal to designate the Belt Parkway-bound right-hand lane as bus-only, and to extend the bus stop on that side down to the block between 87th and 88th streets.

But MTA officials said they were concerned about disturbing residents by changing the routes, and said they would have to conduct studies before pursuing any reforms.

Buses should get the priority space; they move scores of people, while it seems most cars have only one or two people. CB 10 decided not to make to make safety changes that would make it safer to walk on 4th ave. a month ago. Now, they just don't like a lot of buses. The biggest threat to safety is always going to be the cars speeding on 4th ave. 86 and 4th is built for walking and mass transit--it is way pass due to make the necessary changes so that it can accommodate people walking and getting to the bus/train stop.

As usual, cars are the scapegoats to all the problems even when they aren't. The real blame goes to Bloomberg and JSK for making 4th Avenue much more congested than it used to be. This is a major thoroughfare, and it was a bad idea to reduce the travel lanes. Then again, that's Bloomberg and JSK for you! Perhaps, there should be no bike lanes on major thoroughfares let alone allowing for bicycles since having them on such roads is pretty dangerous. However, it does make a good PR movement for the bike zealots, because they can place themselves into harm's way with the way act, and the same with jaywalkers, who hardly obey the crosswalks. Just put some bus stops blocks apart rather than on one block for each of those lines to make it easier.

well for sure more free parking space is needed so moving the busses is not going to happen - the surrounding area is residential and fume spewing whale are not needed their - akin to the junction (google it caleb)

Whatever happens, the MTA will be needed because neither the community or city is in charge of this. One solution is to have the time they reach that depot at different times, which 30 minute intervals seems to work, rather than having them running at the same time. Honestly, I don't think that 4th Avenue should have any bus lanes especially with the fact that traffic is already bad over there, and this will probably just make it worse.

I agree that 86th & 4th is a mess. Something must be done. But, I have to note 81st between 3rd & 4th avenues has become a tractor trailer route. The big rigs come up the block several times a day. They are coming from the Key International Foods between 79th & 80th on 3rd avenue. We have 2 preschools and a grammar school within a block of this. Why is 74th street between 4th and 5th avenues a no truck route? Could it be because a high profile political person lives on that block? Enough is enough. 4th avenue has become a speedway and there needs to be a crackdown on that big time as we know. But, in the meantime lets stop the tractor trailers from coming down the residential blocks.
