A woman was raped at knifepoint on a Greenpoint sidewalk early Sunday morning.

A man put a knife to the victim’s face as she was walking along Java Street between Manhattan Avenue and McGuiness Boulevard just after midnight on June 16, the victim told police. He pulled her down onto the sidewalk and raped her. He told her it was because of her sexual orientation.

“I’m doing this to you because you’re gay,” the man told her in the middle of the act.

The woman was taken to Woodhull Hospital in stable condition. Police are searching for the rapist.

This is the first documented rape by a stranger in Greenpoint this year, although there have been a few date rapes. Last year, at least one man was attacking women in Bushwick, during a handful of groping incidents. No one was arrested in those incidents.

Women in Greenpoint will no longer be able to count on Bushwick Bike Patrol to walk them home. The volunteer service that escorts women home from subways that was started in 2011 during a series of attacks in Park Slope ended last week after founder and head coordinator Jay Ruiz suffered a pair of heart attacks.

Reasonable discourse

Recon Man from Brooklyn says:
So since she was attacked for being gay does it constitute as a 'hate crime', or will the victim be blamed while the perp - if police even bother to catch - gets the usual slap on the wrist like in most violent sex crimes against women in open-minded, tolerant, liberal NYC?

wake up from here says:
NYC is surprisingly tolerant of its feral human population, and even facilitates their housing and breeding. People moving here need to appreciate that just because something resembles a human being doesn't mean that it will treat you like one.

Wake up from here, that's a disgusting statement that exudes ignorance. First of all, why are you insulting the population of the city and not transplants as if you even know that the rapist is a native? No wonder so many people hate transplants, because morons like you make them all look sheltered and annoying.

Jodie from Greenpoint says:
I'm disgusted by many of the comments here. Think of what the victim would feel like if she were to read this. We should be showing compassion, support, and sensitivity for the victim of this heinous act.

Kitdee69 from Bedford Stuyvesant says:
You have to excuse the vile comments from these 'dumbed down' NYers. They live in their own very small worlds and it seems to be a trend not to know much anymore about anyone or about anything but the circumference they live in.

anna from greenpoint says:
this is highly irresponsible reporting—is there a description of the man? What are the police doing about it?

fine to be on high alert but there needs to be a lot more in-depth reportage now. please hold to your responsibilities as a journalist and get the facts—as much as you can—to prevent this from happening.
