A thug shattered a bottle over a man’s head in McCarren Park in a brutal attack that left the victim needing surgery.

The vicious assault came after a Williamsburg man brushed against the assailant after exiting a cab on Driggs Avenue near N. 12th Street at around 10:45 pm on Jan. 24, the victim told The Brooklyn Paper.

The perp launched into an obscenity-filled tirade, but the victim says he avoided confrontation and entered Khim’s Millenium Market.

As the victim shopped, the hot-headed attacker stewed outside with a female companion, surveillance footage indicates.

The victim left the grocery store five minutes later and the thug chased him down, then smashed a bottle over his face near the dog run in McCarren Park.

“I almost blacked out a little,” said the victim, who declined to give his name because he believes his attacker lives in the neighborhood.

An onlooker called 911 and the attacker fled.

“I chased him down Bedford Avenue to N. 10th Street and the cops stopped me there,” the victim said.

Emergency responders took the victim to Woodhull Hospital where he received 37 stitches to his face and eight staples in his head. Doctors also took skin grafts from his ear and attached them to his left nostril, which had been ripped off when the glass shattered.

Police are still looking for the perpetrator.

Witnesses say the suspect is a “very young” Hispanic male between the ages of 16 and 20 who stands between 5-foot-4 and 5-foot-7 and has short, cropped black hair. The attacker was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and dark jeans during the assault.

“I’ve never seen anything like that happen before,” said one witness who declined to give his name. “It was really shocking. Even as it was happening, I wasn’t really expecting it. That kid just seems unhinged. It was terrible.”

Investigators are reviewing videotape captured on cameras at Khim’s, which appear to show the perp lying in wait for the victim with a female companion.

The victim is planning on offering a $2,000 reward to anyone who provides information leading to the arrest of a suspect.

Anyone with information about the assailant can call NYPD Crime Stoppers (800) 577-8477 or e-mail

Reasonable discourse

Vladimir from Greenpoint says:
Guy walks out from cab, pushes stranger, tries to duck him in a bodega, gets beat up and offers a king's ransom in hopes to press felony assault charges--ruining this kid's life.

My thoughts are with you for your full recovery, and hopefully a little dose of humility when you carry yourself through Brooklyn.

peter from greenpoint says:
Vladimir, you are a sub-human to give sympathy for the attacker. Both of you are unwanted in Greenpoint.

Mike from Williamsburg says:
Vladimir. Why are you changing the facts and embellishing details as if it is your story? Are you the father of the attacker? He said brush. Not push. Went to the deli. Not ducking. Why do you assume that the victim is guilty of something? Is it too hard to believe the attacker is just a young hoodlum with rage and irrational behavior that needs attention and that the victim is indeed innocent?

AT from Williamsburg says:
No one deserves this. No one.

There is nothing constructive about smashing a bottle over someone's head. And, if someone brushing (or even pushing) you when exiting a cab warrants an attack of that severity, I think you should question your sanity and go to anger management classes or get locked up forever. There is no need for that kind of violence and peaceful citizens of Brooklyn shouldn't have to live in fear of these animals.

another angry young thug that can't get over the fact that he'll be nowhere in life as his parents live off a government check. Check South 4th. Sick of these animals.

Have fun in Rikers BOY. Say hi to your family while you are there. You are the scum of the earth and will ultimately get pushed out of "your neighborhood". HA.

So sad this cycle of childish hatred. It's hopeless. Nothing is going to fix the sh*t that persists in this life with minds like yours

All you liberals that feel soo sorry for that poor boy who broke a bottle over the guy's head . When he rapes your doughter or mother you'll sing a different song see it all the time so just you wait.

Fedup from Williamsburg says:
The good news is that he'll be caught. Anyone stupid enough to not think of a video camera in a bodega/grocery store will be easy for the cops to finger. If the reward hits his peeps then they'll turn him in first.

The bad news is that it will cost the taxpayers more to house him in prison then it cost the tax paying citizens to house him in Brooklyn this whole time.

QC from Williamsburg says:
To those making light of this violence:

Not that your pathetic and cowardly statements deserve acknowledgement, I just want to add that I know the victim of this disgusting, brutal attack. He's middle-aged. Married. Working-professional. Williamsburg resident for more than two decades. Blinded by his own blood, he chased down his assailant three blocks until the cops made the mistake of stopping him, letting the attacker get away. I'm sorry, but he's just not a hipster, nor is he a pathetic troll like yourself. And if he were, would it matter? This was an unprovoked, undeserved RANDOM ACT OF VIOLENCE… Yes, laugh it up. Laugh even harder if life one day disfigures you for no good reason. Your sentiment makes you no better than the worthless waste of a person that committed this slashing, or the girl that aided him. They will be found, there will be justice. Just be happy this didn't happen to your rotten self. But we all know, I'm not telling you anything you don't already know…

My sympathies to the victim--speed towards recovery, and prayers that the perpetrator will be brought to justice. And prayers also that the many commenters on here also find rest from their hatred, for exploiting this situation to dredge up implicitly racist rhetoric that is unrelated to the particulars of this crime.

Done from williamsburg says:
I don't want to say anything unkind about the obviously misunderstood kid who lashed out in violence on an innocent person, so I'll say something about having common sense.

If a guy is yelling and screaming at you on the street, you need to pay serious attention to that person until you are safely home. If it was me, I would have looked around for the guy as soon as I walked out of the store. I still probably would have gotten hit but I would have been prepared and probably able to cover my face and not take a direct shot.

This guy got blindsided and hurt very bad, people need to be more aware of bad people because they are out to get you.

I also would have called the cops from inside the store and hung out until they rolled by. He probably thought that since the kid was so young and small he wasn't a threat.

Ro says:
well, doesn't look like they've found this kid. if i were a cop i doubt i'd take much time to help a drunk white boy who got his ass handed to him either.

No one knows from e will says:
no one knows what happened before the attack, a brush could have been a push, words could have been exchanged, no one wants to be cut up obviously.

Guess what though, people commit crimes and people have their own street rules, or are just insane. And young. So you can talk about how glad you'll be if he gets caught (but he wont)., and say you are perfect, but if you don't undestand what makes other cultures angry ("hope you get pushed out"), then you could be next, being so spoiled and obnoxious.

Dennis sinneD from Williamsburg says:
Ladies and gentlemen, I share your repulsion at the stupid and implicitly racist comments made here that have no point or relevance to the issue [such as No One Knows from E Will's astute observation, "hope you get pushed out"]. However, I am equally repulsed that there can be any sort of justification involved or applied to this act of violence. Please, it does not do our community any good to validate, justify or rationalize what is clearly a wrongful act. Maybe the victim was a jerk, maybe he was rude, maybe he was pushed, maybe even he is innocent [we haven't even considered that], but, take it from someone born and raised in the Southside of Williamsburg and has "shot the dukes" more than a few times in this life--there is no justification for waiting for and therefore stalking someone to smash a bottle on their head. Anyone who has ever been involved in the fight game knows that a single well-placed punch on the head can kill someone--it's fortunate for this victim [sad to say] he only received stitches. A bottle to the head can concuss or even worse. So please--we can agree that there can be rude, inconsiderate people on the street. Yes, it is Williamsburg where public attitudes can be awful--please don't compound the situation by legitimizing senseless violence.
