CB10 committee votes to put bike routes on Ridge and Dyker streets

A community panel wants to make Bay Ridge and Dyker Heights more bike friendly — but on its own terms.

Community Board 10’s Traffic and Transportation committee voted 6–1 to bring more bike lanes to car-clogged Bay Ridge and Dyker Heights, but the group wants to throw away and re-draw the city’s current bike lane plan for the area.

The city wants to put bike lanes on Fort Hamilton Parkway, Bay Ridge Parkway, and Ridge Boulevard, but board members shot down all but one of the routes.

Instead, the committee voted to have two-way bike lanes on one side of Fort Hamilton Parkway between 84th and 101st streets as well as the entire length of Sixth, 11th, and Marine avenues.

The group also called for one-way lanes on 68th Street from Sixth Avenue to Shore Road and on 72nd Street from Shore Road to Sixth Avenue.

Committee chairman Brian Kieran said the new pedal paths were necessary to link bicycle routes on Seventh Avenue and Shore and Colonial roads with the rest of the borough’s bike lane network.

“The biggest complaint about the bike network is the omissions,” Kieran said.

CB10 hasn’t always been open to bringing bike lanes to the neighborhood.

Last year, the panel rejected the city’s plan to put a bike lane on Bay Ridge Parkway.

Yet last Thursday’s vote shows that board members are rounding the bend on bike lanes.

Even bike lane critic Allen Bortnick said bike lanes were necessary, but shouldn’t be on major thoroughfares.

Still, he refused to vote for new bike lanes.

“This is not Holland. In this city, time means money and New York needs its cars and needs to transport them from one place to another as fast as they can,” said Bortnick.

But bike lane supporter Bob Hudock slammed Bortnick’s comments.

“If you think packing more and more cars onto the street makes a city great, move to Houston,” Hudock argued.

The committee will submit its plan to the full board in September, but the city may ignore the committee’s recommendations, since the group’s role is strictly advisory.

The committee’s decision comes after state senate candidate Andrew Gounardes — who plans to run against state Sen. Marty Golden (R–Bay Ridge) in tha fall — said he would like to connect Bay Ridge and Dyker Heights to the rest of the borough’s bicycle network.

Even Houston is getting the message, just last week, celebrating a $15 million federal grant to help build 18 more miles of bike and pedestrian transport improvements. The city's mayor said "We have focused a lot on hike and bike trails that keep cars and bikes separate, and we'd like to see more of that."

Overall this sounds like a good idea, not quite sufficient, but worthwhile. The most important lane would be the two way on Fort Hamilton Parkway, especially from 92nd Street to Cannonball Park.

I love that the committee thinks it knows more about how to build bike lanes than traffic engineers! What next, the CB10 licensing committee telling bartenders how to mix drinks if they want a liquor license?

Stay stupid, Bay Ridge! The rest of the city is figuring this stuff out and making their communities safer.

Just because you don't understand bike lanes, doesn't meant their not a good thing. In fact, I think because you are so against them, it probably proves they are a good thing.

Good for them for stepping up and proposing something. So many of these community board types just complain about everything without offering any constructive advice. Now that they've put forth a proposal, let's see how it can be made real and become a safe place for people of all ages to use and enjoy.

this is interesting I wonder how this would work, alot of bay ridges streets are narrow, with many many blind driveways and intersections, seems like a tough place to ride a bike, even with a bike lane.

It's that stupid yellow hash marked "safety zone" that is meaningless in the middle of the street.

Please learn to read what's there, not what is not there.

The city needs more delineated bike paths - not lanes. Bike lanes are blatantly ignored by drivers and NYPD.

I thank what Bortnick had to say, because he is right about it. In response what Hudock said to him, he should move to Amsterdam if he loves bicycles so much, because it's not as if anyone is forcing him to do so. Still, if Gounardes wants to win the election for his seat, he will have to have his platform on more than just bike lanes, because that won't be enough to give him a win, and Golden can say that he has nothing but a one track mind on that to take the election from him.

Please explain to me what are these fast moving "cars" that you mention in your statement?

I have been studying your Brooklyn for some time now and I rarely see your "cars" moving fast, as you claim. Having tried all forms of transport in your borough I find that I frequently pass your "cars" while riding my bicycle. I have noted that the pilots of your "cars" are often grimacing in anger, honking their horns, spewing noxious odors into your air, thus making your neighborhoods far more disgusting and horrible than they need to be. It appears that the "car" is a uniquely ridiculous form of transport for a dense, crowded city.

Thus, I would like to learn more of these fast-moving Bortnickmobiles that you have invented. Perhaps this is an innovation that I can take back to Planet Snurp upon my return. Please explain.

I'm glad to see that Bay Ridge is moving in the right direction. One of the nicest things about South Brooklyn is its proximity to the lovely walking and bicycling paths down by the ocean. With the addition of these and other future lanes, more cyclists can visit Bay Ridge and its beautiful waterfront. Added bonus: bike lanes enhance safety for everyone, on a bike, on the sidewalk, and in a car.
