Tea but no sympathy for mosque

More than three dozen self-professed Tea Party members rallied next to the 9-11 memorial at the 69th Street pier on Sunday to condemn controversial mosques near Ground Zero and in Sheepshead Bay.

“Islam has an inherent aggressiveness and the Muslim American Society [the developers of the Sheepshead Bay mosque] are their warriors on the front line,” claimed John Press, president of the Brooklyn Tea Party, which plans to attend a protest outside the Voorhies Avenue mosque site this Sunday. “We have to delay their expansion.”

Press was one of nine speakers during the three-hour rally, where Tea Party members waved flags and held signs reading, “Government which governs least governs best,” a Henry David Thoreau quote that ralliers wrongly attributed to Thomas Jefferson.

At least one woman spent the afternoon in a black burka, carrying a sign reading, “I am Nancy Pelosi,” a reference to the Speaker of the House, a Democratic who has become a lightning rod for conservatives nationwide.

Former Lt. Gov. Betsy McCaughey, Blue Collar Corner blogger Andrew Sullivan, Republican congressional candidate Bob Turner and Republican Assembly candidate Nicole Malliotakis all addressed the crowd, although Malliotakis did not take the Brooklyn Tea Party pledge to freeze the budget and reduce capital spending by 15 percent, to fight the so-called Ground Zero mosque and support a divisive Arizona immigration law that allows police to demand immigration papers from anyone they suspect of being in this country illegally.

The Brooklyn Tea Party formed five months ago. Sunday’s rally was its second, and most successful, outing, Press said, adding that party members usually meet informally every Sunday at the Kosher Hut of Brooklyn on Kings Highway in Midwood.

Many Tea Party groups focus strictly on fiscal issues, but the Brooklyn Tea Party has a strong social conservative component in line with Press’s strong “culturist” beliefs. But Press denied that his group’s opposition to the two mosques is racially motivated.

“This has nothing to do with race. It has to do with culture,” he said. “We fully acknowledge some cultures are different and cultural diversity is real. This is not an Islamic country. We have the majority culture based on democracy and the separation of church and state. We have our own holidays, history and heroes — and we must define and protect it.”

Some dyed-in-the-wool Republican conservatives have said that Press’s views are too extreme, but he retorted that his party will take the lead in turning southern Brooklyn into a GOP stronghold.

“We are very conservative and we’re working to get like-minded people in Brooklyn organized so they know they can make a difference,” he said.

Independent Voter from Bay Ridge says:
These Tea Party folks are the Worst thing to happen to American Politics EVER!! The only thing they accomplish is Dividing the Country... The funnest thing is that all the Tea Party folks Always Vote Against there own Economic Interest!! It's time to do your homework!!!
Ten years from now we'll look back and say "Really in America?!" Yep the Tea Party is truly Un-American!!

Rachel from Brooklyn says:
Dear Independent:
Hussein Obama is the worst thing to happento American politics ever. The Tea Partiers are working to unite all Americans. Notice the country was NOT this heavily divided until Imam Rauf aggressively came in to the picture with his hare-brained idea to build a MOSQUE on Ground Zero. Over 60% of Americans and non-American Muslims do not want a mosque on Ground Zero.

Integrity from Oneida says:
Dear Rachel
Haven't you done your homework and reading? It is not a mosque, neither it is on ground zero. The committee members of the Community center comprises of people from different faiths, there will be other faiths prayer rooms too besides a prayer room for the Muslims, there will be swimming pool, gym, conference room among others offered by the Center to the public. Please do your research properly. It's sad to see some people would keep choosing ignorance or denial or simply hatred/racism over true facts, love, peace... the very same people who labeled others 'Terrorists' when they are the ones who ignites hate & violence. Double standard, hypocrisy & this is embarrassing.

Muhammed. Kabir from Crown heights says:
Masjid is not Muslim property . It's a house of worship as like as other religion. If u have rights to build church or other temple , Muslim has the same rights. Is the Christian extremist or other religion trying to counter islam and Muslim even for worship? Remember that Allah/ god almighty is enough to punish u any way.

Or from yellow hook says:
The Ground Zero Mosque is not a mosque, it's a real estate scam, meant to run up the price of a white elephant property.

The "builders" have no plan, no money in the bank, , and no clear title to the properety.

They want to sell the place at an inflated price. The un-landmarking of the building was a coup, and added to the value. The Landmarks Commission rolled over on que.

If they started demolition today, they'd never have it completed by 9/11/2011 as announced.

SheepsheadBay Man from Sheepshead Bay says:
Most of the muslims I see in stores are using Food Stamp cards, the ones I saw in line in Coney Island Hospital were holding medicaid cards. They are not needed in America at all. They are parasites. First a few muslims move in to your neighbourhood, then they build a mosque, and then as their leader wrote "all residents will flee the neighborhood and we'll buy their houses for cheap". That is their goal. They don't need a mosque. If they love their islam so much, they should have stayed in their filthy third world country. Instead they come here and incite religious and racial hatred. Hopefully with the collapse of US economy there will be more then a few citizens willing to physically deal with them when police and politicians will no longer be around.

Guido Fauci from Bay Ridge says:
Getting thirty people to show up at this "Brooklyn Culturist Tea Party" event was not a big deal in Bay Ridge. About ten of them were speakers, several with entourage, a few others were Republican or Conservative organization types.

Look at some of the kooky remarks that these people have fostered.

The Tea Party does nothing but promote hate. The same structural base that created terrorists. They are nothing but anti-Americans who don't even deserve the press.

joe appelbaum from sheepshead bay says:
let's do a poll of american muslims, and ask them if they love america, if they support israel's right to exist, if they applaud what happened on 9/11, etc. Let's learn what American muslims are all about, once and for all. Let's report it honestly, let's hope they respond honestly. I'd love to see an anonymous poll of American Muslims; then we can all gauge the advisability of bringing in more muslims and building more mosques here in America. Are they "5th columnists"? Are they "hate America firsters"? Do they hate Jews? Do they hate Israel? Do they support the destruction of Israel?
