Police arrested a suspect on Friday night in the shooting of a Williamsburg rabbi’s son that has rocked the neighborhood’s Hasidic community for two weeks.

The alleged assailant, Jaquan Vaughn, 22, and an accomplice, shot Burech Halberstam once in his stomach outside his S. Ninth Street home on Aug. 10 at 12:15 am, after they allegedly attempted to rob him.

The two suspects fled down Berry Street in a white van, but a Hasidic volunteer police force recovered the car in Bedford-Stuyvesant a few hours after the shooting.

The van contained prints that led cops to Vaughn, an ex-con, who confessed to the robbery and the shooting after he was arrested, police said.

Cops are still looking for the triggerman, while Halberstam, 25, is recovering from his wound at Bellevue Hospital and is in stable condition.

Word of the arrest rapidly spread through the Hasidic community after Shabbos concluded on Saturday evening.

Community Board 1 member Simon Weiser congratulated Shomrim, the volunteer police force in the Hasidic community, for doing a “great job” assisting in tracking down the getaway van.

Isaac Abraham, another community leader who has criticized the police for its lack of resources, praised the 90th Precinct’s detectives for investigating the case and swiftly making an arrest.

“This was a quick and good arrest,” said Abraham. “The inspector was given the resources and the Shomrim organization should be complemented too. Once they had the plate number is was only a matter of time.”

Reasonable discourse

Mike from Williamsburg says:
If this had been a Puerto Rican who had lived in Williamsburg, the case would go unsloved for years if at all, but since its a Hasidim, the 9-0 does it in record time! Funny how things work, yet Puerto Ricans have lived in this neighborhood longer than the Hasidim and Yuppies and get no special treatment like this! SMH!

ken from Bed-Stuy says:
Although I'm glad the guys responsible for the shooting were apprehended, Mike has a valid point. I had a friend who was murdered in Bed-Stuy way back in 1978 and till this day no one was ever caught.

Janice from Northside says:
Mike the Jewish chassidim have ZERO crime and create Zero crime So I understand the police department very well if something happens in the jewish community that they have to act swiftly, its a kinda payback for keeping the community safe.

Bushwick Jew- not really, but, Yay!? from Bushwick- says:
The Hasidim have zero crime? really?

Maybe you meant-

They're pressured to report zero crime to agencies not of their own. And therefore, statistics appear as they do.

As for them not committing any crime?

Sodomy, fraud, child endangerment, etc

These aren't crimes specific to one clan. They're crimes specific, sadly and regrettably- to the human race.

Yay!@*(#$

bill mack from williamsburg says:
The distributors of "club drugs" - caught here in Brooklyn, and Belgium and other places in Europe are those Yeshiva boys - in theory always studying the torah; there are construction deaths, real estate fraud etc etc etc

but am I an anti-semite when pointing these little details out?

Marty from live on South 9th says:
Mike,it has nothing to do with race or religion, only with the pressure that was put on the Police and on the media, if the Puerto Ricans would be united againts crime it would also be solved, unfurtinatly they dont care, in fact you guys stir up crime drugs and violence in this neighborhood, so if you want to hate jews for wanting safty and peace go right ahead, and in matter of fact Hasidam live here long before Puerto Ricans moved in here in the late 1970's and drove hasidem out of here with crime and Violence,

This is NY and NOT Isreal from Bushwick says:
Thanks Mike,

Tell the truth. If you remember back in 1988 when NYPD has a hispanic cop patrol the Williamsburg neighborhood giving out tickets on Graham Ave. But specifically told NOT TO go on Lee Ave where Jews double and triple park their cares. He refused and retained a lawyer about it.

BOTTOM LINE JEWS do get preferrential treatment and that isn't Anti-semetic at all.

IT IS JUST PLAIN TRUTH!

Marty from S 9th says:
Last I checked we do get special treatment when it comes to double parking, lol, you can't double park in williamsburg for a second without getting a summons, and when you go to any othe neighborhood in Brooklyn, when its alternate side parking you see block after block double parked cars,
Where is that special treatment ?

placebo137 from gpoint says:
i'm pretty sure the jews were here before the puerto ricans, but is that to say that a puerto rican based crime was never solved? these guys were stupid, they were able to catch them quickly because according to the original story someone followed the van after the guy was shot. thus they had a witness and a license plate. even the 90 could solve that crime when criminals leave fingerprints. otherwise they probably wouldn't have been caught.

George from Williamsburg says:
Mike,
As a long time resident I want to point out that we are very happy the hasidim moved in. They have a zero tolerance level for crime. Thats the reason the cops help them.
I dont know about child molestation and fraud, but as far as I know a jew didnt shoot no one in willy in its history.
It hurts u?
Go to Iran. Meet up with ur mf.

Barry's bro from Willy says:
Mike and fraud Bushwick Jew,
What do u think cops try to get the guys that shoot "those" jews? Do the cops attend "the elders of zion" meetings? Get alive! Shooting violence is zero in the orthodox community so police get alot of heat when something like that happens in their community.
Chosen people in fact!

Mike from Williamsburg says:
Is it true that the Hasdim don"t shoot anyone? Of Course. Is it true that instead, they commit fraud, molest, engae in prostitution with crack fiends in Cheers on B'way-of course!

No one race is better than another, however lets keep it 100% honest, Some people have lived in WIlliamsburg for 5 maybe 10 years, some might be here from the original Yuppie invasion circa '95, I've been here for 29 years, I've seen it all. The Hasidim have been in the 9-0's pocket ever since 92 when the Jewish girls got raped under the bridge, thus creating "Jew Patrol!"

When the hasdim want something, they get it! MONEY TALKS and I don't think any Puerto Rican or even together if united have enough power ($) to sway the 9-0.

Is it true that this never happens to the Hasdim and maybe thats the reason why the 9-0 acted so quick... maybe, but a lot of Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, and even "poor" yuppie artists get assusalted, shot etc. and yet you never see a response like this.

You can dilute this all you want, but I'm just calling it how it is, how it's been since the Puerto Ricans moved in since the LATE 1950s!!
