The mosque is important to our community

As Americans living in a peaceful, diverse community for over a decade, the Muslims of Sheepshead Bay need — just like people of other denominations in the area — to build a house of worship. And as residents and business owners in the community, we did not anticipate the uproar and the hurtful rhetoric.

The site is planned to be a Muslim community facility that will serve the Muslims residing in the neighborhood. It is in compliance with the codes and the zoning laws of the city. The building will include a prayer hall, a library and classrooms. It will bridge the gap that has been created between Muslims and non-Muslims in the past nine years. The activities include youth and community service programs, after-school tutoring, and English as a Second Language classes, which will be open for everyone.

We acknowledge that there are some legitimate concerns. We will continue to comply with laws and regulations in order to avoid, minimize or eliminate any traffic and transportation issues that might come up as a result of the project. However, we will continue working towards building a house of worship, and affirming our rights.

The Muslims have been a part and parcel of various New York communities — including the one in Sheepshead Bay — for a very long time. The Muslim American Society of New York, as an organization, has been around for over a decade, working with local elected officials, interfaith groups and other organizations and agencies. The Muslim American Society worked for more than a decade in the city to make a positive change in the lives of families and youth. It is an incorporated, not-for-profit organization which promotes youth development, charitable work, community service, and that is why Sheepshead Bay decided to affiliate with such an organization.

From the Muslim American Society Youth Center in Bensonhurst, to the mosques in Astoria and the Bronx, to a full-time school in Yonkers, we have been active participants in our communities. The Muslim American Society — along with the other Muslim organizations — raised funds for the Katrina disaster victims, and contributed, on the national level, $1 million for the victims of the Haiti earthquake. The society supports its projects through charitable donations from the local Muslims. Muslims in Sheepshead Bay will be part of those productive actions for the good of the community.

As residents and business owners in Sheepshead Bay, we are committed to positive contributions in the community and neighborhood. This first project will bring the community together. We are certain that the rhetoric of hate, racism and bigotry have no place among the good people of Sheepshead Bay and the city.

Ibrahim Anse is the architect of the proposed mosque.

BrooklynQ from Sheepshead Bay says:
The owners of this Mosque just don't get it. The land they have purchased is in the middle of a residential block on a very busy narrow street. The surrounding neighborhood can not support a 4 story community center with no off street parking.

I fully support the Muslim's right to build, but the spot chosen is wrong. I wish they would take a look at locations on the major avenues. There are plots avialable on Ave X, Nostrand Ave, Sheepshead Bay Road, all outside of a residential section.

Or maybe talk with some of the existing religious communities. St. Mark Church on Ocean Ave for example has a convent that is empty and could easily be converted into a mosque.

This Center is going to do just fine, the opposition does not surprise me. In time hearts will change.

I coulda sworn that St. Mark was pressured out of its role in an interfaith-clergy-led peacewalk some weeks back. Sure nuff, this paper sez "the original starting place for the parade — St. Mark’s Catholic Church on the corner of Ocean Avenue and Avenue Z — was changed after the church pulled out, citing local complaints, organizers said." It's right here
(Paper also reports anti-Muslimisms that people yelled at the peacewalkers.)
Not real promising, BQ.

Brian from Sheepshead bay says:
Just deciding to call yourself a "peacewalker" doesn't automatically mean that you are coming from a higher moral ground. It's bad enough that wew have to live with existing religious facilities, but I certainly don't want new places opening to promote hysteria and belief in a god that actually doesn't exist.
Would this be a "peace walk" if it were an attempt to open a scientology office or a witches' coven?
No, then it would just be called loonies marching to promote weirdness, which is exactly what this is.
I am glad to hear that the convent is nearly dead - hope that even if it's built that this mosque is too, and that people have better things to do than hang out in the cheesey community center.

Wake up, people, awake America! No mosque for enemies! The WW3 is on!Between ISLAM and other world.
Every(from 1000 mosques!!!)in USA is part of giant plan of islamization of America, as well as Gr.Britain, France, Germany, Spain, even Scandinavia.Just look around! They want to dominate this world, and you, naive and kind Americans, you believe them? Islam-is not religion, but ideology! Enough political correctness, they just washing our brains, using our laws, our democratic principals, which so far from their understanding.Say truth!Remember 9/11?It could be good lesson, but not for Blumberg and his bandits in City Hall. They approved the felony(mosque on Gr.Zero)What a Shame! Good present for heroes-shahids and for Osama ben Laden. We will pay expensive price for that in the nearest future.
