A racially charged teen rumble in Bay Ridge’s bucolic Owls Head Park ended with gunfire on Wednesday, leaving one teen critically injured.

Police said blood was spilled after a group of Hispanic youths and some Middle Eastern teens threw down at around 6:45 pm.

The Hispanic teens were hanging out near the basketball courts on the Colonial Road side of the park near 67th Street when the Middle Eastern teens arrived looking to settle a score — the two crews had clashed a few weeks earlier at 86th Street and Third Avenue. As a result one of the Hispanic teens was slashed in the leg and two of the Middle Eastern youths were arrested.

Yet police sources said this powwow wasn’t expected to end peacefully — especially since both groups showed up armed.

“The [Middle Eastern] kids came to the park with bats, but the other group had a gun,” one police source said. “Obviously, the gun beat the bats.”

That became apparent when the they charged each other in some kind of crazed “Gangs of New York” re-enactment. Seconds into the fray a 16-year-old Hispanic brawler pulled a gun and opened fire, hitting one of the Middle Eastern teens.

“I was leaving the park with my dog when I heard the gunshots,” said Bernadette Hoban, president of the Friends and Neighbors of Owls Head Park. “I said to myself ‘Wait a minute, that doesn’t sound a firecracker!’ ”

The wounded teen was rushed to Lutheran Medical Center, where he was listed in critical yet stable condition after surgery.

The shooter and two other suspects, also 16, were collared and charged with attempted murder and assault. Few details of the arrest were immediately available.

The groups were ethnically divided, but no racial epithets were thrown during the fisticuffs, said police, who have increased their patrols in area parks.

“A lot of kids and a lot of families go to these parks,” said Inspector Eric Rodriguez, the commanding officer of the 68th Precinct. “To shoot a gun like that in the middle in the park is dangerous. That’s our concern as we continue our enforcement.”

Hoban agreed.

“These kids don’t usually hang out at the park, they just decided to meet there, but still it was scary,” she said. “Three families were having a picnic in the park near the playground that night. That was just steps from where the shooting took place.”

Wow, it's like the wild west - a showdown at noon in owlshead park!
I wonder if these ethnic gangs wear cowboy hats? It would certainly be cute if they did.
Muslim cowboys vs. Los Cowboyos ... no... maybe los banditos!

teegee from sunset park says:
i think it is so politically correct to refer to the gangs thru generalizations when i am fairly certain the specific south or latin american country could have been mentioned, and even more that the other group wasn't called

i would never have guessed thirty years ago that my sunset park would be the safe neighborhood and that i would be sitting in my hot tub reading on my netbook about the gang warfare in bay ridge...i love it...

i guess if you live long enough, you get to see it all

Went Bike riding after work and apparently it just happned. A woman showed a lot of courage by volenteering to go to the 68th. and ID the sooters that were rounded up while a very young cop stayed on the corner of 68th& Colonial rd. and watched her kids. talk about community involment. My hat is off to that woman!!! If anyone who's whom I'm talking about this was a special person! is Bernadette Hoban related to Officer Hoban from Bay ridge. ( Gunned down in the line of duty in the 80's) saw her name in the article.

Jon from Bay Ridge says:
Not surprised. I grew up in Bay Ridge and I've seen it turn from a quite working class neighborhood slowly into a sh!t hole filled with the slime that is getting kicked out of Red Hook and Sunset Park and all the middle eastern poor emigrants. No, I'm not racist. Just a realist. I see how dirty Bay Ridge has gotten and it's from the people moving in. Soon Bay Ridge will become the Sunset Park/Red Hook of the past.

the man with the plan from bay Ridge says:
smh, I got to fort Hamilton and patria(hispanic gang) and YFL(yemen crew) fight all the time, but mad respect to yfl because they beef with a legit gang and are not scared of anything. But no disrespect to YFL but if this was plo(palestanian gang) it would of been the patria kid in the hospital, what happened to plo?? back in the day thats all you heard about in school. Anyway I cheer for YFl when they fight because they put Bay Ridge on the map and alot of Patria kids just look for problems. DA BAAY ALL DAAAY!

Anne from Bay Ridge says:
This is why I'm moving to Bed Sty. I'm afraid of what is going to happen in Bay Ridge. I moved here less than 10 years ago, and it has really gone down hill since then. The gangs that are taking over here are a lot scarier than the gangs in other parts of Brooklyn. I wonder how the old school mafia is going to deal with this. There might be an even bigger show down than this. (And we all know it won't make the papers.)

This is a beautiful neighborhood--just walk around Shore Rd. or Ridge Blvd.Very clean & lovely. Too bad those thugs had to come to our Owls Head Park to cause trouble.I am a senior & walk everwhere--never have I had even a hint of trouble. Those thugs & creeps are the exception, not the rule.

Sucameli from Ridge says:
In the last five years the gangs have been allowed to flourish in the parks in the Ridge. At night they walk thru the streets drunk ,fighting each other, beating up girls, and insulting homeowners asking them to move on and keep their voices down at 2a.m. The cops, where ever they are not in the streets and when called ,take forever to respond. People are selling and planning to move out of this area in the next five years.
A beautiful neighborhood down the drain because of ethnic gangs, like years ago,and lack of police activity.
