‘Goods’ news as 3rd Ward founders get into food

Food carts? Feh.

On June 9, when the folks behind 3rd Ward turn an ugly, empty Williamsburg lot into a dining destination, they’ll be giving this king-sized borough what it really needs: a king-sized food truck.

“This lot was kind of an eyesore, but you couldn’t build anything on it because of various restrictions — so we decided we didn’t have to,” said Jason Goodman, a partner and a founder of 3rd Ward, just across the street.

Instead, Goodman and crew decided to restore a 25-foot 1946 Spartan trailer rescued from a junkyard in Ithaca and turn it into a kitchen — that is, after 200 hours of polishing and stripping six layer of paint.

But enough about the space — let’s talk food. Alex McCrery — a former sous-chef at New Orleans’s legendary Commander’s Palace — will head up the kitchen on wheels. But the menu will turn north — and downmarket — from McCrery’s fine dining background. Instead, the eatery will whip out polished American classics like grass-fed burgers, organic all-beef hot dogs, and, naturally, Brooklyn Lager-battered fish and chips.

Goods will offer a smallish breakfast menu, too — biscuits with sausage egg and cheese, hash browns, granola, classic New Orleans beignets and coffee from Intelligentsia. That’s a sure step up from the donut cart outside the office.

Diners can opt for delivery, take-out, or sit in the 35-seat garden adjacent to the trailer, landscaped by another of the 3rd Ward crew.

It’s hard to argue with a Goods thing.
