Publisher Ed Weintrob’s editorial advocating using the federal stimulus to build the Atlantic Yards arena unleashed a torrent of responses on BrooklynPaper.com, our award-winning Web site. Most comments were negative, but believe it or not, some commenters sided with Weintrob:

“I agree with this editorial. The fact that it will create thousands of construction jobs is another good argument to support this project.”

Sol from Park Slope

“Yes, build the arena! Like virtually every other large project that was predicted to be the end of civilization (Ikea, Metrotech, Atlantic Center, etc.), the arena will be a huge plus for Brooklyn.”David

“I say, build this thing with federal money and have the state or city own all or half of it. It’s about jobs, jobs, jobs! If y’all want to live in a city with small-scale development, move upstate.”

neiljames from Bed-Stuy

“On top of the construction jobs being created to build the stadium, think of the local businesses that will be booming with stadium crowds for games. That creates not only tax dollars, but jobs. The stadium sounds like stimulus for years to come.”

Jeff from DUMBO

“I thought the article was fantastic and agree wholeheartedly.”

Al from Park Slope

“For over 50 years, the boro has been mourning the loss of the Dodgers. So what’s wrong with a sports team that will bring back the buzz to Brooklyn?”Jenny from the Block

“Imagine all the homegrown Brooklynites, from Jay-Z to Neil Diamond, playing stadium dates in the borough they grew up in. That’s about a borough, not about a billionaire!”Guy from Brooklyn

“Absolutely, build the arena now.”David from Kensington

Reasonable discourse

"what’s wrong with a sports team that will bring back the buzz to Brooklyn?”

What's wrong with it is that our tax dollars are going to fund a private sports team.

I'd like to think that's not why I pay taxes.

If it is such a good idea, let RATner pay for it himself.

You didn't publish my comment reply to Sol from Park Slope.

To equate the opposition to Metrotech and Atlantic Center to the opposition of Atlantic Yards is disingenuous. It is one thing to be a cheerleader for the arena because you like sporting events, but to go ahead and knowingly generate misleading statements is forwarding a game of deception.
