Marty bought $1.45M home with hard work — and a big slip-and-fall case

How did Borough President Markowitz, whose city salary is $160,000, manage to buy a $1.45-million lovenest in Windsor Terrace? All it took was money from a “slip-and-fall” case that put a serious crimp in his sexual relations with his wife, Jamie.

Markowitz’s purchase of a swank home in Windsor Terrace has been the talk of the neighborhood since the Daily News broke the story last week — but few of his future neighbors know that he got a large portion of the cash to buy his new executive mansion from a 2003 settlement in a personal injury case.

It all started on an icy day in 2001, when Markowitz took a spill in an Econo Lodge parking lot in Albany. The vicious fall resulted in surgery involving “total left ankle reconstruc­tion” and the insertion of a metal plate and screws that left Markowitz seriously disabled for roughly four weeks.

Two years later, Markowitz and his lawyer, Jonny Kool (seriously), sought a whopping $6 million in damages from the owners of the motel. Six million smackers? Before you guffaw, this was one serious injury, as the court papers show:

“Jamie Markowitz has been deprived of the value of the full services, society, support, assistance, companionship, consortium, duties, obligations and the affection of her husband,” the document states. “[The injuries] will result in her future loss of enjoyment of life and marital services.”

Markowitz ended up hobbling away with a settlement of $350,000, of which the Beep pocketed $255,000 — money that resurfaced last month when Markowitz and his wife put down roughly $1 million of the $1.45-million asking price for his Terrace Place crib.

The rest of the money for the big down payment came from the sale of a $750,000 Manhattan Beach home inherited by Jamie Markowitz.

Regardless of the backstory to the legendary renter Markowitz’s first gambit with homeownership, locals seemed happy about having a minor celebrity in the neighborhood.

“Now we have somebody to tell our problems to,” said Rocky Gallo, the owner of United Meat Market on Prospect Park West.

And the owner of Pierre’s Deli on the corner of 16th Street and 10th Avenue said he was so enthused by the borough president’s arrival that, pressed by The Brooklyn Paper, he unveiled “the Marty Markowitz” sandwich, a towering heap of grilled roast beef, caramelized onions, layers of fresh mozzarella and slathered with the sweet steak sauce from Peter Lugar. After a taste test, The Brooklyn Paper newsroom was divided.

Markowitz’s new digs stand as a major change in lifestyle for the longtime tenant advocate.

The million-dollar home also marks a new chapter in Markowitz’s Horatio Alger-esque rise from public housing in Sheepshead Bay to idyllic Windsor Terrace, with its quiet side streets and proximity to Prospect Park.

The previous owner of the house, Jeanneene Booher, was not starstruck while sealing the deal.

“I don’t know him from anyone, really,” said Booher, who was surprised by a call from The Brooklyn Paper. “When my grandchildren go to sing at the Brooklyn youth chorus, he’s always there. He and his wife seem like nice people.”

One neighbor on Markowitz’s block did foresee certain benefits of the borough president’s arrival. Just recently, the sewer drains were cleared out on the block, something the neighbor — who did want to give her name — saw as a direct result of Markowitz’s influence.

“He had five trucks out here cleaning the sewers. I’ve been waiting 15 years for my sewer drains to get cleaned,” the neighbor said. “At least now it’ll happen every six months, since it affects him.”

I'm very glad Mr. markowitz has finally found a home in which he & his wife can enjoy in the comfort of peace & quiet. Well... My neighbors & other residents will also like to live in the same type of peace & quiet Mr. markowitz & his wife will soon enjoy. But...is this possible with the monstrocity of an 8000 seat Commerical Amphitheater in Asser Levy/ Seaside Park that he has proposed? I think NOT.
In fact, Friends of Seaside Park ,who is fighting this project has over 10,000 signatures who are against this project.
With the new Amphitheater that will operate 4-5 months , 4-5 days per week, there will be over 40,000 people trekking through my neighborhood & my neighbors & causing many traffic ,parking, noise, public safety issues.
Not only that, this boondoggle of a project will take away the only OPEN SPACE PARK in our neighborhood.
Mr. Markowitz again,let me make it clear : the reisdents of West Brighton Beach ask you to move the Amphitheater to Coney Island proper , not the bedroom community
of West Brighton Beach.

I don't think Marty grew up in Sheepshead Bay. Try Central Brooklyn.

And "deprived of his services?" Jamie probably would've paid the motel $500,000 to break the other ankle.

he deservies it, he's had to kiss alot of ugly babies to get ahead. the real question is why is this anybodys business and why is this newspaper printing this article to begin with.

It's a great story. Pyschologically it shows why Mr. Markowtiz wants to build such a BIG, OVERSIZED 8000 SEAT AMPHITHEATER in the bedroom community of Brighton Beach.

those bedrooms wouldnt be there except for the commerce that was the beach.

those bedrooms are left over remnants of an era where there was half a million people each saturday and sunday. their peace and quiet is solely because of a lull in NYC in general.

p.s. i aint for the amphitheater, but the little old ladies shouldnt be bothered routine is kinda tired.

I love all the oohs and ahhs about Marty moving into the neighborhood. The only benefit will be better sevices to the area. It is sadly laughable that people are so duped by this self-serving, Napoleonic acting former good guy. He no longer serves his constituents. He throws their concerns down so that he can enhance his own.

"Why is this newspaper printing this article to begin with?" Because it is aware of the way he does things that have questionable resources and intentions.

And we are aware that he is taking over $64 million dollars of our tax money to build an 8000 seat commercial amphitheater in a small neighborhood park displeasing over 10,000 residents whose bedrooms are just above the park. Windsor Terrace would just love to have 8000 patrons crossing under there bedrooms every day I am sure. So...let's just move this venue to Windsor Terrace near where Marty lives so when he goes home for quiet after a day of work he will know how we feel.

You know what. HE JUST DOESN'T CARE, DOESN'T CARE ABOUT US AT ALL. HE JUST DOESN'T CARE. HE IS DEAF ANDF BLIND TO OUR PLEAS. I am repelled by his behavior.

There haven't been a half million people at the beach since the early 50's. I know I've been living here for over 50 years.

If you knew anything about the neighborhood, you would also know that the high rises that
surround Seaside Park were built about 40 years ago, although there is a newer high rise built 29 years ago, The SeeBreeze Condos.

If you are for building an 8000 seat Amphitheater & now that Marty is your next door neighbor, get a petition going & get some signatures & send them to him at BoroHall to built where you live.

We already have over 12,000 signatures against this monstrocity. Get with the program.

It's still amazing that for almost $1.5 Million you only get a semi-detached house in Brooklyn!

And don't worry too much about "Al Pankin" and his comments. Pretty sure all his drivel will stop once Marty gets out of office after his illegal and disgusting next term. And that's if this steadily sliding paper is still being published...

You're right. Under normal circumstances what Marty Markowitz does with his money and where he chooses to buy his home is his business. But he's using his position to impose a "pet project" in Asser Levy park, against the wishes and interest of the people who actually reside there and are invested in the community, so he is bound to open himself up to some scrutiny.

Despite the public outcry, and pure absurdity of an 8000 seat amphitheater in a small local park surrounded by residential apartment buildings, he is pushing ahead. And up until recently, got very far in getting it rubber stamped by the design commission, bypassing ULERP evaluation. All this, because he kept the project under the radar and dissected all "improvements" when presenting before the design commission so that no one had any idea what the complete project was supposed to be.

Why such an aggressive push, at the possible cost of his political reputation and career? When you start to use public funds for such a self serving project, people are bound to look into his personal business.

The community unfortunately gave Marty Markowitz an inch, allowing him to run his wretchedly loud rock concerts on Thursdays during the summer now he decides to take a foot by building an 8,000 seat venue in the middle of a high-rise residential neighborhood. How inconsiderate for him to engage in such loutish behavior in a neigborhood that has one of the largest senior citizen demographics in this area. It is unexceptable for him to vibrate our walls for and entire spring and summer.

Freddy from slope, you are probably mistaking our neighborhood with Coney Island proper, even though we are only 2 train stops away from Astroland amusement park. We are located in an area where there aren't, and never were any commercial businesses on the boardwalk or the homes surrounding the park, and therefore no commerce from the beach. That is one of the things that makes this area so attractive to young families (like my own), and not just little old ladies (who's opinions should be valued as much as anyone else's if not more). A two lane street is all that separates the buildings from the park.

But rest assured, if a "Marty Markowitz" sets his eyes on a park in your neighborhood as an attractive piece of real estate that he'd like to utilize for his own pet project, I would understand your point of view even though your neighborhood doesn't affect me personally.

who cares about where the boro President bought a house period. He prior to this lived in the slope, and stepped up tp a semi attached house worth a fortune. It should not have been prined in the paper to begin with

Bottom line, Mr. Markowitz now you can build your 8,oo seat Ampitheater fior the people in Windsor Terrace maybe they will like it there. However the people of West Brighton Beach and all the residents surrounding this neighborhood don't want this monster to be built.
Mr. Markowitz get rid of your big ego, and find a place where this Ampitheater belongs, but NOT HERE in Asser Levy Park, it is not an amusement Park, Coney Island is.

brooklyn is the third densest county in the country. peace and quiet arent likely when all of the public transit empties out near you.

that being said... i am sure there are many reasons to fight the amphitheater. residents expectation of quiet isnt one in my book. but i also think we should open a loud bar in windsor terrace ;)

Good thing Marty didn't fall on an MTA bus! You can't sue the city.

I fell off an MTA bus in Windsor Terrace in January, 2001. My arm was broken - needed surgery to insert a metal plate and screws to join the bone again. Loss the use of my left hand; muscles atrophy after some time in a cast.

Three months later, my employer laid me off because I wasn't recovering swiftly. Wearing the cast for so long caused me to suffer pain and weakness in my shoulder.

After the cast came off my broken arm, I needed five/six months of physical therapy to regain functionality in my left hand.

Needless to say, my spouse didn't get any great shakes from dodging my arm in a cast for so long. Definately limits one's options.

But you can't sue the MTA!

This is an imcomplete article. How much did Marty Markowitz have to pay to the Rawlings Company from his settlement????? A few months after you are hospitalized, the Rawlings Company wants all of the money back that was paid for your surgery....and if you did not sue...they will sue, even if you do not. The Rawlings Co. collects money on behalf of your medical insurance co., and keeps a large portion of it...so it lowers your settlement..and u end up paying for your own medical treatment..
