In an interview with The Brooklyn Paper, Rep. Ed Towns’s challenger Kevin Powell hyped his knowledge of the neighborhoods and said his self-acknowledged history of violence should not be held against him.

While Towns bought up Powell’s thin background as a negative, Powell saw Towns’s criticism as something else.

Powell said that black leaders in Towns’s generation have sought to supress the next generation of young black leaders. He also slammed Towns for endorsing Rudy Giuliani for mayor.

Huh2008 from FtGreene says:
Are you guys kidding me?!? You bill yourself as a reputable paper, but 27 minutes, and you have not even asked ONE.SINGLE.HARD-HITTING.QUESTION!!!

Seriously, are any of you interested in putting these guys on the hot seat? You all want change, but you don't give a damn what kind of change you get. Powell has absolutely, positively no plan or plank on how to practically implement any - ANY - policies to benefit Brooklyn. All he does is talk about ending the occupation of Iraq, fostering the economy, repealing "Don't Act Don't Tell" (his spelling, not mine). None of these are things a freshman Congressman would be able to do.

And then you ask what Powell thinks of Towns's missed votes?!? Yeah, such a great question. Considering that is one of Powell's only talking points, why not just repeat something he has said over, and over, and over, and over again. How about you ask him his plan to raise test scores in Brooklyn public schools? Position on Charter Schools? Funding for the Arts in Brooklyn? Future plans for Prospect Park? 3-5 year plans to implement Empowerment Zones?

No, you chicken-sh*tted out ... jeez. What a waste of an opportunity.

DisappointedInBKPapers from Clinton Hill says:
I don't understand why you guys let Powell off the hook for his violence being "in the past" and say "10 or 20 years ago" when his last incident with violence was only FOUR YEARS AGO when he bit another journalist at a club.

Also, a 70 page manifesto?! If it's at all littered with the typos and grammatical errors that his "9 point" platform press release was, it oughtta be pretty entertaining.

Ed Towns may not be perfect. He may not even be the best man to represent Brooklyn - he's been around the block and he's probably tired at this point. I can envision many others running for his seat in 2010 and winning (I'd vote for Hakeem Jeffries!!), but this guy, with his history of violence and gigantic ego... No Thank You.

David M. Quintana from Ozone Park says:
This guy, Kevin Powell is a sham. He has NO history or past, as to where he comes from...

What was the outcome of the alleged problems at Rutgers University - the alleged two incidents with females and knives?

Was he arrested and or forced to leave the school?

Were there any agreements made with the female students and Rutgers?

There was a similar alleged type of event later on., the alleged assault on a reporter.

Were there any arrests in these cases?

It's alleged that he's held s sham/scam fund raiser and refused to refund money.

This man is a specter, there has been NO info on his personal life a to his marital status, children, girlfriend, boyfriend, et al..

He's a phantom in the communities he seeks to represent.

His voting record is spotty over the years according to Board of Election records.

He has NO associations with any Brooklyn community organizations – NO NAACP, NO YMCA, NO Brooklyn Democratic Club, NO Civic Associations, et al.

There is NOthing he can truthfully say that he participated in or sponsored in East New York, BedStuy, Brownsville, Ft. Greene, Canarsie, etc..

He came out the woodwork. Rootless in community and only connected with City Councilman Barron and A.T. Mitchell.

Man-up organization which Powell is affiliated with is basically a Charles Barron organization funded with a little bit of money from the City Council.

For any woman or women's organization to support a woman abuser is to believe that a leopard can change it's spots. Kevin Powell is an out-and-out unrepentant misogynist and abuser.

There are so many questions Powell still has to answer before he can be legitimately taken seriously as a candidate for the US House of Representatives against Chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform and incumbent Rep Ed Towns, in the 10th Congressional District
