Inspired by a day of gazing at works by Dali and Ernst at the Museum of Modern Art, Park Sloper Ron Katz has opened The Surreal Cafe. But don’t worry, while surreal works by local artists line the walls the food will not remind you of melting clocks and dripping eggs.

Says Katz, who has lived in the Slope for 20 years and opened his cafe on Aug. 3, "Surreal is a good name for a cafe, but doesn’t describe our food."

What diners will find at the Surreal Cafe are hormone-free meat and poultry and organic fruits and vegetables in simple "American bistro" preparations.

Chef Nir Feller, formerly of Williamsburg’s Diner, serves up his healthy fare with "enough options so vegetarians won’t feel like afterthoug­hts," says Katz. Dishes such as beets stuffed with bulgur (cracked wheat grains) and lentils cooked in pomegranate juice should satisfy non-meat eaters, while salt-cured roasted pork chops with yellow and green string beans will make carnivores happy.

For everyone, there’s an upside down cherry "thing," says Katz, served with creme fraiche, a carrot cake made with orange juice and a fig tart.

Katz can gaze at his new cafe through his apartment’s windows.

"It’s a corner store with huge windows," he says of the eatery’s location. "When the sun sets on the glass it’s beautiful."

The Surreal Cafe (79 Fifth Ave. at Prospect Place in Park Slope) accepts American Express, Discover, MasterCard and Visa. Entrees: $12-$18. The restaurant serves lunch and dinner daily. For information call (718) 857-5252.
